Queer Contemporary Art in Kentucky: Expressive Fine Art by Joshua Jenkins
“Art has always been a way to explore identity, emotion, sexuality, place, and personal truth. As a Kentucky artist, my work is rooted in expressive visual storytelling, combining elements of contemporary art, fine art, street art, masculine energy, queer identity, sexuality and raw emotional honesty.”
Based in Kentucky and connected to the creative energy of experiencing life in cities such as Louisville and Philadelphia my artwork is made for collectors seeking bold, personal, and visually powerful original art for sale. Rooted in figurative Expressionism, my paintings and mixed media pieces explore the male form through vivid color, gestural mark-making, assertive line work, and richly layered surfaces. Influenced by street art, Naïve Art, Pop Art, and artists such as Basquiat, Baselitz, Condo, Kirchner, Picasso, and Twombly, I create raw, vibrant, and psychologically charged compositions that feel emotionally immediate. Much of my work reflects my experience as a gay man, examining queer identity, masculinity, desire, intimacy, sexuality, vulnerability, and the search for connection. Whether distorted, fragmented, or emotionally intensified, the figure becomes a way to explore selfhood, belonging, and the complexity of human emotion. My goal is always to create artwork that feels alive—work that carries presence, tension, beauty, and a distinctly human pulse.
Gay, Queer, and Expressive Art
Queer art is not simply about labels—it is about freedom, visibility, emotion, identity, and the courage to be seen. As a contemporary gay artist based in Kentucky and connected to the creative energy of Louisville, my work explores themes rooted in gay and queer experience, including confidence, vulnerability, desire, masculinity, intimacy, self-expression, and the complex search for belonging. Through bold figurative painting, expressive mixed media, vivid color, and emotionally charged imagery, I create artwork that reflects both personal truth and a broader LGBTQ+ visual language.
For collectors searching for gay art, queer art, LGBTQ-inspired artwork, contemporary figurative art, or original paintings by a proud gay male artist, my work offers a bold, intimate, and unapologetically personal perspective. I am drawn to art that resists feeling generic, overly polished, or copied. Instead, I want each piece to feel original, energetic, and alive—carrying tension, beauty, raw emotion, and honesty. My goal is to create contemporary queer artwork that feels visually powerful and deeply human, speaking to collectors who value authenticity, individuality, and art with a strong emotional pulse.
“Room for Five” 30 x 48 x 1.5 in Acrylic & Mixed Media on canvas (2026) $1,800.00
“I care deeply about making art that is affordable without ever sacrificing quality, originality, or meaning. I don’t believe a painting becomes great simply because it has an expensive price tag. To me, the value of a piece comes from the work itself—the emotion, the individuality, the craftsmanship, and the connection it creates with the person viewing it. Art should not be reserved only for the wealthy. I believe original, meaningful, high-quality artwork should be accessible to everyone, because everyone deserves the chance to live with something unique, expressive, and personal.”
Contemporary Fine Art with Street Art Influence
I am a painter and multidisciplinary artist whose work is shaped by the contrasting landscapes of my life—growing up in Poughkeepsie, New York, with frequent exposure to the urban energy of New York City and Philadelphia, alongside formative years spent in rural Kentucky. This duality continues to inform my visual language, where the grit, speed, and immediacy of the city intersect with the quiet intensity and emotional atmosphere of the countryside. The result is artwork that exists between worlds: raw yet refined, expressive yet intentional, contemporary yet deeply personal.
My style is influenced by contemporary fine art, expressive painting, figurative art, mixed media, and the visual language of street art. I am drawn to strong contrast, textured surfaces, gestural mark-making, movement, layered imagery, and emotionally charged compositions that feel alive. The urban environments of New York City and Philadelphia exposed me to graffiti, street culture, public expression, and the visual tension of city life, while Kentucky gave me a different kind of intensity—space, isolation, reflection, and a deeper awareness of identity and place. Together, these influences shape bold original paintings and mixed media works that carry both urgency and emotional depth.
Street art has always been connected to rebellion, visibility, identity, and public expression. Fine art, on the other hand, often brings a sense of refinement, permanence, and collectible value. My work exists somewhere between those two spaces—where the spontaneity of urban art meets the depth and intention of contemporary painting. Through vivid color, assertive line work, layered surfaces, and expressive figures, I create work that feels modern, personal, and psychologically charged.
For collectors interested in contemporary fine art, modern art, urban art, expressive painting, figurative painting, mixed media artwork, street art-inspired painting, and bold original artwork, my work offers a distinctive point of connection. It is created for those who are drawn to art with texture, emotion, energy, and individuality—work that does not simply decorate a space, but adds presence, personality, and a strong visual pulse.

Masculine Art, Erotic Art, and the Male Form
Majority of my artwork explores masculine art, male identity, gay male experience, and erotic art through a contemporary figurative lens. I am interested in the male form not only as an image of beauty, attraction, or physical presence, but also as a symbol of strength, vulnerability, desire, tension, intimacy, and emotional complexity. In my paintings and mixed media work, masculinity is not treated as something fixed or one-dimensional. Instead, it becomes layered, expressive, and psychologically charged—something shaped by confidence, longing, tenderness, power, and the need for connection.
Erotic art can be powerful when it is created with intention, honesty, and emotional depth. It can be sensual, intimate, confrontational, symbolic, romantic, raw, or deeply personal. My interest is not simply in making provocative images, but in exploring the deeper relationship between the body, identity, attraction, self-expression, and queer visibility. Through bold color, expressive line work, textured surfaces, and distorted or emotionally intensified figures, I use the male body as a way to examine desire, vulnerability, and the complexity of being seen.
For collectors searching for masculine artwork, gay male art, queer erotic art, LGBTQ figurative art, contemporary male nude art, original figurative paintings, or expressive mixed media artwork, my work offers a distinct perspective rooted in both personal experience and contemporary fine art. Based in Kentucky and connected to the creative energy of Louisville, I create bold original artwork that speaks to collectors who value authenticity, emotional intensity, and art that feels human, intimate, and alive.

Original Artwork for Collectors
Original art carries a presence that mass-produced wall decor simply cannot replicate. An original painting holds the hand, emotion, instinct, and vision of the artist. Every mark, layer, texture, and decision becomes part of the work’s history. Unlike printed decor or generic artwork, a one-of-a-kind painting brings individuality, depth, and human energy into a space. It becomes more than something placed on a wall—it becomes part of the atmosphere of a room and part of the personal story of the collector who chooses to live with it.
My artwork is created for people who want more than decoration. It is made for collectors who are drawn to expressive fine art, contemporary painting, queer identity, masculine imagery, figurative artwork, street art influence, and bold visual storytelling. Through vivid color, layered surfaces, gestural line work, and emotionally charged compositions, I create original paintings and mixed media pieces that are meant to feel alive, personal, and visually memorable.
One of my goals as a Kentucky contemporary artist is to create affordable original art with the energy, quality, and ambition often associated with larger art markets like New York City, Miami, Los Angeles, and Berlin. I believe collectors should be able to access powerful, original contemporary artwork without feeling limited to mass-produced prints or priced out of collecting serious fine art. My work brings together the boldness of urban art, the emotional depth of expressive painting, and the personal honesty of queer contemporary art—while remaining approachable for collectors who want meaningful, original pieces.
For collectors seeking original artwork in Kentucky, Louisville contemporary art, affordable contemporary art, queer fine art, gay male art, masculine figurative painting, expressive mixed media artwork, or bold modern paintings for the home, my work offers a distinct and personal point of view. Each piece is rooted in authenticity, emotion, and individuality—created for those who value art with presence, tension, beauty, and meaning.
